Biking the Creeper Trail
The Virginia Creeper Trail is possibly the easiest, prettiest mountain bike ride you will ever encounter. The Va Creeper Trail, which is actually the "retired" railway corridor of the Virginia - Carolina Railroad, has a gently descending grade and well-groomed surface, lending itself perfectly to downhill adventures, the Virginia Creeper Trail is an attractive mountain-bike ride for cyclists of diverse abilities. Most folks prefer to drive to Damascus (the "Heart of the Creeper") and shuttle to Whitetop Station the highest point on the trail to begin their 17 mile downhill ride to Damascus. The eastern section travels downhill through the Jefferson National Forest in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and along the Whitetop Laurel Creek (bring your fishing pole).
Some folks also enjoy biking the western section over to the quaint town of Abingdon. This section travels through rolling farmland and has a gentle uphill grade into the town.
